Why is digital literacy important?
I know you are all here to read a fun and interesting blog post and this is, trust me, but I’m going to give you a few facts first.
- 35.2% of chemists are women;
- 11.1% of physicists and astronomers are women;
- 33.8% of environmental engineers are women;
- 22.7% of chemical engineers are women;
- 17.5% of civil, architectural, and sanitary engineers are women;
- 17.1% of industrial engineers are women;
- 10.7% of electrical or computer hardware engineers are women; and
- 7.9% of mechanical engineers are women

Now these numbers are low and they are even lower when talking about minority women.
You can make these numbers rise.
Salem Square Library is hosting a Girls Go Digital program for any girls in grades 4-8 who are at all interested in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math). Just 10 girls will gather together, learn together and build together. We will be working with circuits, coding computers, building robots and so much more.
Girls Go Digital is more than just hands on experience, the girls will be building their knowledge, experience and confidence and they start with a pile of wires and batteries and create something they designed.

This is how you can get involved:
- Information session Dec. 14th at 4pm: We will cover the dates and times, the commitments, the activities, and the girls will also do their first engineering project while meeting the other participants.
- If you aren’t able to make it to the information sessions, no worries, you can still sign up.
- Starting Jan 15 -18, 2018 we will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5:30 p.m. at Salem Square Library.
