Place a Hold

Reserve a book, movie, or other material from our collection through your online account! When you place a hold, you are submitting a request for an item to be picked up at your local library.

York County Library members may place up to 10 holds at a time.

Holds will be available for 7 days after they are ready for pickup from the library.

How to Place a Hold

Follow the steps below:

  • Log in to your online account
    • By default, your username is the same as your library card number.
      • If your username has changed, try using your library card number first.
      • If you are unable to log in, contact your library to reset your settings.
    • Your password will likely be the last 4 digits of your library card.
  • Search for an item from our catalog.
  • After finding the item you want to place on hold, select the “Place Hold” button beside the name of the title. Please Note: Selecting this button does not complete the hold request. You must fill out the Place Hold form on the next page to complete your request.

    • If you wish to place multiple items on hold, add the item to your “basket.” You can later view all items in your basket and place a hold at one time.
  • You will then be directed to the “Place Hold” page

    • If you have enabled notification preferences, some of your personal information may be automatically filled in.
    • Complete the form with your notification preferences
      • Please Note: Some libraries do NOT support phone call notifications, including Martin Library.
    • (Optional) Check the box to suspend the hold
      • Suspended holds will keep their place in the queue but will not become available until reactivated.
      • Use “Set activation date” to optionally choose a date for when a suspended hold will automatically reactivate.
    • Click the “Submit” button when you are finished.

Cancel or Edit your Holds

  • If you have items on hold, you can check the status of your holds from the My Account menu. Click on the “On Hold” option to view your current holds.

  • On this tab, you will see your current holds

Suspend, Activate or Cancel the Hold

  • Select the checkbox beside the title of the item to “select” it.
  • Once an item is selected, select the “Actions for Selected Holds” menu. From this menu, the hold can be:
      • Suspended: Stops the hold from being processed for you but does not lose your place in the queue of holds.
      • Activated: If the hold was previously suspended, this function re-enables the hold to be processed.
      • Cancelled: Removes the current hold for the item
  • Select the action you need and click the “Go” button to make the changes.

Edit the Hold

  • Select the “Edit” button beside the title of the item
  • The “Editing Hold” page will open
    • While here, you can adjust various settings about your hold, including the pickup location.

View Available Holds

After logging in to your account, you can see the status of your holds from the top-right corner of the screen:

This menu is viewable from any page on our online SPARK portal.

From this menu, you can find the items that are:

  • Currently checked out to you
  • Placed on hold
  • Ready to be picked up at your library

Also from this menu, you will be able to see any fines that may have accrued on your account.

Expiring Holds
