Place a Hold

Reserve a book, movie, or other material from our collection through your online account! When you place a hold, you are submitting a request for an item to be picked up at your local library.

York County Library members may place up to 10 holds at a time.

Holds will be available for 7 days after they are ready for pickup from the library.

How to Place a Hold

Follow the steps below:

  • Log in to your online account
    • By default, your username is the same as your library card number.
      • If your username has changed, try using your library card number first.
      • If you are unable to log in, contact your library to reset your settings.
    • Your password will likely be the last 4 digits of your library card.
  • Search for an item from our catalog.
  • After finding the item you want to place on hold, select the “Place Hold” button beside the name of the title. Please Note: Selecting this button does not complete the hold request. You must fill out the Place Hold form on the next page to complete your request.

    • If you wish to place multiple items on hold, add the item to your “basket.” You can later view all items in your basket and place a hold at one time.
  • You will then be directed to the “Place Hold” page

    • If you have enabled notification preferences, some of your personal information may be automatically filled in.
    • Complete the form with your notification preferences
      • Please Note: Some libraries do NOT support phone call notifications, including Martin Library.
    • (Optional) Check the box to suspend the hold
      • Suspended holds will keep their place in the queue but will not become available until reactivated.
      • Use “Set activation date” to optionally choose a date for when a suspended hold will automatically reactivate.
    • Click the “Submit” button when you are finished.

Cancel or Edit your Holds

  • If you have items on hold, you can check the status of your holds from the My Account page.
  • From the menu on the My Account page, select the “Holds/Ready” button. Then click “Items on Hold.”
    • Tip: The number beside the “Holds/Ready” button indicates the total number of holds placed on your account and the number of holds that are ready for pickup. You are allowed to place a maximum of 10 holds at one time.

  • On this tab, you will see your current items on hold

Suspend, Activate or Cancel the Hold

  • Select the checkbox beside the title of the item to “select” it.
  • Once an item is selected, select the appropriate action button:
      • Suspend: Stops the hold from being processed for you but does not lose your place in the queue of holds.
      • Activate: If the hold was previously suspended, this function re-enables the hold to be processed.
      • Cancel: Removes the current hold for the item
  • Once an item hold is suspended, activated, or cancelled, it will be updated and visible from the “status” column on this page.

Edit the Hold

  • Select the “Edit” button beside the title of the item
  • The “Edit Hold” page will open
    • While here, you can adjust various settings about your hold, including the pickup location.

Expiring Holds

Once a hold is ready for pickup from the library, the items will be reserved for 7 days. After this time, the hold will be removed from your account.
