Book Donations

Do you have some new or used books to donate to your local library? Are you looking for a book sale to add items to your home library? You’re in the right place!

Read below to learn about guidelines for donating books to libraries; which libraries always have something for sale; and learn about upcoming community fundraisers, including book sales, to support your library.

Donate books to a library

Most of our libraries can accept books in like-new or good condition! Here are the general guidelines for acceptable materials—and what we can’t accept:

We will gladly take:

  • Books published within the last 5 years
  • Recent Bestsellers
  • Clean copies of classic titles (e.g. not highlighted or written in, nor items which are not in good condition)
  • CDs or DVDs
  • Children’s books in good condition

Sadly, we cannot take:

  • VHS Tapes or Cassettes
  • Encyclopedias
  • Textbooks
  • Magazines
  • Reader’s Digest Condensed Books
  • Records or Vinyl Albums
  • Books with water damage
  • Books with other poor conditions such as smoke exposure (including cigarettes), insect activity, mold, or mildew

Most of these items are best disposed of by including them in your paper recycling* or waste disposal.

*Check with your recycling authority to ensure items are locally recyclable

Find a Book Sale or Fundraiser

Many of our libraries have a ‘perpetual sale’ shelf in addition to bigger book sale fundraisers! It’s always fun to see what’s on the shelf. Prices vary by item and location.

The following libraries have a shelf or small area of books for sale when the library is open:

  • Dover Area Public Library
  • Glatfelter Memorial Library
  • Kaltreider-Benfer Library
  • Kreutz Creek Library
  • Mason-Dixon Public Library
  • Paul Smith Library of Southern York County
  • Red Land Community Library

Three libraries offer a larger-scale book sale onsite. This includes:

  • Collinsville Community Library’s Second Read Bookstore located in a trailer next door
  • Guthrie Memorial Library’s book sale room
  • Village Library Friends’ book sale room

In addition to the ongoing book sale at Red Land Community Library, you can find more gently used books at Damon and Dora’s Vintage Clothing and Antiques in Goldsboro. Sales made at the shop directly support the library. (Thanks, Damon and Dora’s!)
