“A Celebration of Poetry” Martin Library’s 29th Annual Poetry Night

Robert Frost said, “I have never started a poem yet whose end I knew. Writing a poem is discovering.” Poetry is not only a way for the reader to discover something new, but for the writer as well. This is why poetry can be an essential tool for both children and teens.

Martin Library is pleased to launch the 29th Annual Poetry Contest. This contest is open to students in 1st through 12th grades. Students should reside in York County. In the past, contests have garnered over 200 entries and awarded prizes to 20 winners in six age categories. Over the years, the panel of independent judges has included  published poets, college poetry professors and child educators.

From now until February 6th, York County students will have the opportunity to submit one original poem. Submission guidelines can be found below. Poems will then be read by the panel of independent judges. Individual winners in each age group will be contacted by March 20th. Winning poems will then be compiled into a booklet that each winner will receive and that will be added to the collection at York County Libraries. All winners will be invited to read their poems at: “A Celebration of Poetry,” Martin Library’s 29th Annual Poetry Night, on Wednesday, March 28th.
