Spooky Fall Reads

Fall is my favorite season. I grew up in New England, so the second I spot a leaf changing color, I’m ready to bake an apple pie, don all my scarves, and break into a giant pile of horror books.

Whenever someone learns that that I’m a fan of horror literature, that tidbit is either met with excitement at connecting with a fellow ghoulish soul, or I end up on the receiving end of a fair amount of side-eye. The truth is though, horror fiction has always been a part of our culture, whether it be scary stories told around childhood campfires or the wild success of television shows like The Walking Dead

The bottom line is, we like to be scared.

So, in the spirit of being spooked, here are 10 authors who have written some of the most terrifying tales of horror:

Stephen King
Paul Tremblay
Alma Katsu
Carmen Maria Machado
Stephen Graham Jones
Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Libba Bray
Grady Hendrix
Caroline Kepnes
Alexis Henderson

Each of these authors has at least one book here in the collection at Paul Smith Library, and even more can be borrowed from our partner libraries throughout York County. Don’t be scared to request a frightening read as we creep closer to Halloween!

Just don’t forget your nightlight.
