Feature Artist: Fran Drisgill

The Dillsburg Area Public Library’s featured artists for May and June 2022 are all from the Hanover Arts Guild. Our art wall coordinator Shelby Pizzarro caught up with one of the artists, Fran Drisgill:

What is the source of your inspiration?

Mostly flowers!  I like to grow them, arrange them and then paint them to preserve their beauty.  I also like to paint pretty landscapes.

How would you describe your art?

For years I’ve been a very realistic, detailed painter.  Recently I’m trying to loosen up my style which, for me, seems to work better on landscapes.

What do you enjoy most about creating new art?

I enjoy the beauty of a finished painting to be enjoyed by myself and others.

Do you have a favorite medium? Has your preference changed over the years?

I started with oils but always wanted to learn how to paint with watercolor.  So after I retired, watercolor became my focus.  Then when I was home more with all the Covid restrictions, I watched internet videos and learned how to paint with acrylics.  At the moment I like to paint flowers with oil or watercolor and landscapes with oil or acrylics.  Each medium has its advantages and disadvantages; I like to work with all three.

How have you managed to stay creative during the COVID-19 Pandemic?

After learning the basics from some acrylic landscape classes online, I felt comfortable enough to join a Plein Air group.  Painting outside on location was something I could do with other artists that allowed for distancing but did not require a mask.
