Martin Library to Recognize Dr. Pamela Gunter-Smith

YORK, PA – The Martin Library Honors Committee will recognize York College of Pennsylvania (YCP) President Dr. Pamela Gunter-Smith during an upcoming ceremony and reception. The event will be held at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 19 at Martin Library in York. Individuals interested in attending the Martin Honors event should register at donate.yorklibraries.org.

“Dr. Gunter-Smith’s championship of innovative educational opportunities is a trait we admire in our spring honoree. During her ten years at York College, Dr. Gunter-Smith developed strong community connections and partnerships,” says York County Libraries President Robert F. Lambert. “The resulting initiatives provide YCP students with a dynamic educational combination of academics, beyond-the-classroom learning, and real-world problem-solving.”

Dr. Gunter-Smith became the fourth president of York College in July 2013, and is set to retire this June. In addition to her numerous academic achievements, her involvement in community and professional organizations is extensive. She is the president of the William Townsend Porter Foundation and serves on WellSpan’s Central Region Board of Directors. She is also involved with the York County Industrial Development Authority, the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania Board (AICUP) and serves on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU). Dr. Gunter-Smith is a member of the Better York Executive Committee, and the Pennsylvania State Board of Education.

She holds a B.S. in Biology from Spelman College and a Ph.D. in Physiology from Emory University. She conducted postdoctoral studies at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

The Spring 2023 Honors Ceremony will feature tributes to Dr. Gunter-Smith by several guest speakers. They include YWCA York CEO C. Kim Bracey, and York County Economic Alliance Economic Initiatives Director David Gonzalez. Two York College of Pennsylvania colleagues, Dr. Joshua DeSantis and Cindi Reisinger, will also speak. DeSantis is an Associate Professor of Education and serves as the YCP Director of Graduate and Post-Traditional Programs. Reisinger works directly with Dr. Gunter-Smith as YCP Senior Executive Assistant to the President.

A key component of the Martin Honors event is to establish a perpetual fund to purchase books in the name of the honoree. Contributions are welcome by donating securely online at donate.yorklibraries.org or by mail to Martin Library Honors Fund, 159 East Market Street, York, PA 17401.
