Sensory Story Time Expanded in Winter 2020

Join us for Sensory Story Times!

Our Sensory Story Times have been developed to aid children aged 2-5 with their sensory needs. Therapists from Connections Early Intervention & Supports partner with York County Libraries staff to provide story times that children of all abilities can enjoy! Connections Early Intervention & Supports believes that children learn best with the people they know best. Whether you are a parent, a grandparent, a nanny, or other primary caregiver, these events provide early literacy programming for children who might find regular story times overwhelming or too busy.

One parent said:

“My son gets easily anxious in certain situations. But after a couple of visits, the patience of the staff and the fun activities won him over. The staff was understanding. They supported him and gave him freedom to explore!”

What to expect:

Sensory story times provide routine, structure, and sensory experiences that meet the different needs of children and the families who attend. Visual schedules are used so children know what to expect. We keep the attendance small to avoid overwhelming anyone. Children and their caregivers play, move their bodies, and feel different textures. We encourage everyone to come to as many sessions as possible!

Benefits the whole family!

Parents and caregivers bond with the children as they listen, play, and sing along during the story time. The therapists also welcome any questions that parents might have. Opportunities to ask questions are available in the large group as well as on a one-on-one basis—they are here to help you! If needed, the therapists can also assist families in connecting with community resources.

This program started at the Kaltreider-Benfer Library in Red Lion, but thanks to a 2019 grant from the York County Community Foundation’s Fund for York County, York County Libraries is able to bring this program to five more library locations in early 2020. The early 2020 sensory story times will be in York, Dover, Hanover, Etters, and Glen Rock. By the fall of 2020, we hope to make this opportunity available at all of our locations.
