Just a few months ago, Kaltreider-Benfer Library staff and volunteers packed up and moved over 40,000 books out of their 147 S. Charles Street location. The goal was to completely empty the building in preparation for construction and renovation. While most of the items are currently in storage, a small selection of new adult and children’s books, large print titles, and rental DVDs are available at the library’s temporary site just inside Rear Door 5A at Windsor Manor Elementary School. According to staff, the key to easily finding the library is to turn onto Second Street to access the school’s rear entrance. There is no way to drive around the building from the front.
Construction Progress
Construction progress at Kaltreider-Benfer Library’s S. Charles Street location is certainly noticeable. The project started in May with interior demolition in preparation for renovation and rear expansion of the building. A recent visit to the library found the recognizable shape of the future circulation desk, and drywall up inside. This month, the interior will be painted, and ceramic tiling, flooring, plumbing fixtures and casework will be put in place.
At the rear of the facility, the library’s expansion is being built. Construction workers poured concrete for the future children’s area and conference room. It took five to six mixing trucks – arriving every 25 minutes- over a five hour period to complete the concrete pour. Since that time, the frame has gone up, roof trusses installed, and exterior plywood wall sheathing applied. Coming up next will be the installation of the metal roof, trim, siding and windows.

Kaltreider-Benfer Library is open during the following hours at Windsor Manor Elementary School, 2110 Windsor Road, Rear Door 5A:
Monday & Wednesday 2:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m
Tuesday, Thursday, & Friday 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.,
Saturday & Sunday Closed
Community members with questions or who want help renewing books, can call the library at (717) 244-2032.
Limited Services Available at Temporary Location
In addition to browsing select collection items, members can scan and make copies at the library, and access printing services by emailing files to be printed. Unavailable services include faxing, computer access, restrooms, and seating.
Because the library does not have a book drop at the school, after-hours book return is not available. Library materials should be returned during Kaltreider’s operating hours or dropped off at any YCL location. Find one here.
