Little Library, Big Heart!

August 2025 update:

Last year, the Arthur Hufnagel Public Library of Glen Rock was forced to close for repairs and remediation due to water damage. Although immediate repairs were completed quickly, testing revealed that the building’s air quality was unsafe.

YCL leadership met with Arthur’s Friends and Borough officials to assess the building’s more significant needs and develop a plan. The first step in this plan: raising $140,000 to ensure all necessary work can be completed, making the library safe and sound for years to come.

As of August 2025, a major milestone has been reached—over $130,000 raised!

Arthur’s Friends and Borough officials have done a tremendous job:

  • Spreading awareness about the importance of Hufnagel Library to the Glen Rock community
  • Organizing and running various fundraisers to support the reopening
  • Advocating for the library

We’re excited to announce that remediation work on the Arthur Hufnagel Public Library of Glen Rock is slated to start Monday, August 18, 2025!

The Arthur Hufnagel Public Library of Glen Rock sits just steps away from the lovely York County Rail Trail. Our library activities can often take us outside for some adventures in nature! Inside the library, we have a Children’s room, public computers, lots and lots of books, a rotating art gallery, and sometimes, a string quartet playing in the stacks! Besides a wonderful selection of books for all ages (we have an amazing collection of Graphic Novels), our library gets a front row seat to the beautifully restored historic steam engine of the Northern Central Railway when it puffs on by. Stop on by!

FAQs about Reopening Arthur Hufnagel Public Library

If remediation goes smoothly, we are planning to reopen this fall. The library will offer its traditional core services including programs, collections, computers, Wi-Fi and more.

It is important to do this properly to ensure a safe library environment.  YCL, the Glen Rock Borough and Arthur’s Friends all collaborated on this project.  The Friends have championed the project of raising funds to reopen the library.

For everyone’s safety, library items and books that were damaged will not be utilized. Since mold spores can spread and ruin the collection, we are disposing of these items. This is crucial to clear the way for remediation.

Yes. The process of rebuilding the collection is already underway. There will be a fresh collection of new items, newly purchased books, fan favorites gifted by other libraries, and unaffected materials that were on loan at the time of the flood.  Books you borrow (from over half a million items in the YCL collection) can be safely delivered to Hufnagel following reopening.

Professional remediation and renovation, along with air quality testing, will ensure that staff, volunteers, and library members are all in a safe environment.
