Glatfelter Memorial Library Honors Dr. David Renaut
The Glatfelter Memorial Library Honors Committee proudly selected Dr. David Renaut as the 2019 Honoree for their inaugural Honors Event. Dr Renaut has had a decades-long career in education in the York area, ranging from administering elementary schools to teaching college classes. He has been a staunch supporter of libraries throughout his many roles. He was recognized for his outstanding dedication to the Spring Grove community during an honors ceremony at Glatfelter Memorial Library on November 17, 2019, at 2 pm.
About Dr. David Renaut
Dr. Renaut started his career in education nearly 40 years ago after graduating from Shippensburg University, when he began work as a social studies teacher at Shippensburg Area Senior High School. Following this, he began work with the Carroll County and Southern York County Public School Districts. Subsequently, he became the principal of the New Salem Elementary School in Spring Grove Area School District (SGASD).
Most recently, Dr. Renaut served as superintendent of the Spring Grove Area School District. Over the course of his career, he has taught 5th and 6th grade social studies, risen through administrative levels from assistant principal to superintendent, and has been an adjunct professor at York College of Pennsylvania.
Books and Literacy
As a lifelong book lover and literacy advocate, one of Dr. Renaut’s key beliefs is that books and libraries offer access to the limitless opportunities found within the written word; this, he believes, is at the core of learning. He particularly likes historical fiction because it motivates readers to explore the past by engaging them with interesting characters living through significant historical events or settings. Dr. Renaut appreciates that historical fiction allows readers to experience different times and viewpoints.
Some of his favorite books include the “Hardy Boys” series by Franklin W. Dixon, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy, and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey.
For these and other services to his community, Dr. Renaut was honored at a reception on November 17, which was open for the public to attend. The day’s event was planned by the Glatfelter Memorial Library Honors Committee, which includes Honors Committee Chair Kristen Henning and Alissa Barshinger.
The ceremony featured several guest speakers. These included Karen Baum, a SGASD board member and former teacher; Robert Shick, current principal of New Salem Elementary; Kathy Eshbach, SGASD’s Assistant Elementary Principal; and first-grader Emma Lewis, who is Dr. Renaut’s granddaughter (and Glatfelter Memorial Library member). A reception followed.
A key component of an Honors event is to establish a perpetual fund to purchase books in the name of the honoree. Contributions are welcome at any time by donating securely online or by mail to:
