Story Times for Children from Birth to Preschool

York County Libraries offers story times across the county for young children from age birth to preschool. With our interactive Story Time sessions at the library, children have a fun and educational time through interactive play, games, music, and more!

During these unique sessions, caregivers can get involved in assisting children with the activities, which can also be played at home for a fun family learning activity. Our different Story Times are carefully crafted to meet the early education goals of each specific development phase, but families are welcome to come to any Story Time with older or younger siblings.

At York County Libraries, there are story times for young children of all skills and age groups. Our current sessions include:

Baby Story Time | ages birth to 2 years

Literacy can be introduced to your child from before the day he or she was born. During Baby Story Time sessions, our library staff incorporate activities that encourage gross motor skills, pre-literacy skills, and social time for babies.

Upcoming sessions

Toddler Story Time | ages 2 to 3 years

During Toddler Story Time, interactivity is a key component. Finger-play, early STEAM concepts, and hands-on activities and motions are incorporated into each one of these sessions to encourage gross motor skills.

Upcoming sessions

Preschool Story Time | ages 3 to 5 years

As with our other age groups, Preschool Story Time includes hands-on activities and crafts that assist with gaining fine motor skills. Not only are these sessions fun for your child, but they encourage essential social skills with other children.

Upcoming Sessions

Sensory Story Time | recommended ages 2-5

Sensory Story Time is developed for those with sensory needs. In this inclusive space, therapists and library staff work to meet the needs of the children and families that attend. This program encourages children to come as they are! Therapists will be available to answer families’ questions.

The Autism Acceptance Month Interactive Resource Guide has selected library books to help children understand what autism is. There are also topic searches of books to check out from the library, and local, regional, online, and national services and resources to support families with an autism diagnosis.

Benefits of Early Literacy

You are your child’s first teacher!

Learning starts at home. Through literacy-based story times, York County Libraries is a valuable partner in education with parents and caregivers. Story Time staff model activities and provide tips that build early literacy skills, and they select books and activities that help develop the skills needed for young children to be ready to read. These skills include reading, singing, talking, writing and playing.

Story Times provide opportunities for children to learn:

  • Fine and gross motor skills
  • Facial expressions and social skills
  • Listening and pre-literacy skills
  • And so much more!
