Guthrie Library Honors Andrew Smith
It is with pleasure that the Honors Committee of Guthrie Memorial Library announces its twelfth honoree, Andrew “Andy” Smith. Andy’s community leadership and service to the library will be recognized in a ceremony on Sunday, October 26, 2025.
About Andy
Andrew (Andy) Smith was born and raised in Hanover, PA where he graduated from Hanover High School in 1982 and then attended Millersville University. He was a music teacher for 32 years, primarily teaching instrumental and general classroom music to middle school students in Perry County.
Andy’s wife, Deb, also retired from a public-school education career. They have two daughters, Caetlyn and Hannah, as well as several grandchildren with whom they both enjoy spending time.
Andy currently operates Visual Realia, a clay monoprint studio in Gettysburg. Solo exhibit locations include the Adams County Arts Council, The Grotto, the Out Door Country Club, and the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design in York.
Andy is a board member of Guthrie Memorial Library in Hanover, the Adams County Farmers Market, and the DreamWrights Center for Performing Arts in York. He also serves as the board chair of Ophelia’s Making Agency, a nonprofit in York which offers artists studios at below-market prices, as well as business mentoring to local entrepreneurs. He previously served as a board member and chair of the Hanover Area Arts Guild as well as a council member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hanover. His interest in his community led to a roughly ten-year term on Conewago Township’s (Adams County) Zoning Board. Other projects include serving as a “grant navigator” with the Cultural Alliance of York County.
One of Andy’s most important contributions to our community is the establishment of Culture On The Line, an online platform for documenting the region’s cultural highlights, providing an opportunity for writers and visual artists to have their work shared, read, and seen. He also curates regularly changing exhibits at The Gallery at the Old Post Office, located in Hanover’s Renaissance Revival structure, completed as a post office in 1913 and serving as such until 1969.
Andy enjoys keeping his Little Free Library (a small, accessible collection of reading material shared in the yard) stocked with books, magazines, and newspapers for his neighbors to enjoy. When visitors stop to grab a book, they are welcome to walk through the library’s yard, which features raised beds of wildflowers and native plants.
His time with Guthrie Memorial Library is an honor for him. It is a jewel in the region and something worth supporting. His mother, Arleen, took Andy and his siblings there, leading to strong memories of the summer program. His mother would gift honorary book donations and later worked there as a volunteer.
