Shelby Pizzarro – The Alchemy of Nightfall

What is the source of your inspiration for the current exhibit?

I love the art of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and Sisterhood. I also am intrigued by the light and shadow of night. There is a special alchemy in moonlight. For this exhibition, I decided to fuse the two, exploring analog and digital collage. I am also exhibiting a woodcut/serigraph print.

How would you describe your art?

My collage art is a combination of analog and digital art. I am a printmaker and also like to incorporate woodcut or linocut elements in my work.

What do you enjoy most about creating new art?

There’s always something new to learn. There are many “aha moments” when finding exciting uses for supplies and ephemera!

How do you start new work? Is your process always the same? If not, how does it change?

The basic process for new art is pretty much the same each time. I have a collection of papers and supplies that I routinely look through. I love to read and many times my reading material inspires me and finds its way into new art.

Do you have a favorite or “go-to” technique when starting a work?

Depending on the final work techniques vary. But one thing that is constant is looking for interesting papers, and ephemeral that can be incorporated into the art.

Do you have a favorite medium? Has your preference changed over the years?

My preference has remained the same over the last several years. I love collage art; there are so many directions the work can take. And finding a new use for materials is always exciting.

Do you ever experience a creative block? If so, how do you rejuvenate your creativity?

Yes, I have experienced a creative block. Talking with other artists always helps. Scissors and Glue is a collage group that meets monthly at the Library. Everyone is so creative and generous with their time, materials and ideas. It’s hard not to rediscover your creativity when you are around them.

Do you have a favorite or inspirational quote?

“Synchronicity is an ever present reality for those who have eyes to see.” C. G. Jung

Do you have any current or future projects you’d like to share?

I hope to continue creating analog/digital collage art for giclée prints and greeting cards. I am also working on an altered book, finding a home for a lot of my cherished ephemera.
