Library Card Sign-Up Month

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 17, 2026

September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month

YORK, PA – This September, York County Libraries (YCL) and libraries across the nation are inviting community members to discover how a single card can open the door to opportunity. Library Card Sign-Up Month is a reminder that libraries are for everyone.  Libraries connect individuals to information, inspiration, and each other through books, resources, and programs. There is no cost to obtain a library card. Community members are welcome to apply online at yorklibraries.org or at their local library

“York County Libraries offer a wealth of literacy and learning opportunities for all ages and educational interests,” says York County Libraries President Robert F. Lambert. “As individuals gain knowledge and develop new skills, their growth and success contribute to a stronger and even more vibrant York County.”

According to Lambert, residents turn to the library for many reasons including job resources, vetted health information, and financial planning resources. In 2025 alone, cardholders borrowed over 1.4 million print, digital, and other items from the library. YCL helps bridge the digital divide by providing access to computers and Wi-Fi. Last year, York County residents used YCL’s Wi-Fi over 167,000 times and public access computers on nearly 42,000 occasions.

For families, libraries offer a budget savvy way to provide children with as many books as they want to read, plus access to fun and educational programs. Last year, libraries presented over 4,000 programs for more than 100,000 children, teens, and adults.

York County Libraries strengthen the community and enrich individual lives. YCL’s programs and services help community members build the five core literacies championed by the Pennsylvania Library Association PA Forward® program. Thirteen library locations provide the latest in print and digital information, bestsellers, Wi-Fi, story times, book discussions, and databases.
