Jan will be the featured artist in the Dillsburg Area Public Library’s Beyond Books Art Gallery in September and October 2025.
What is the source of my inspiration?
Can be a pull towards a specific color, the strokes on the canvas representing a moment of peace (or chaos) that is happening in my life. It can be the beauty coming from various flowers blooming around me or from a dream late in the night.
How do I describe my art?
My art is never a realistic interpretation of real-life inspirations. Impressionistic and contemporary in the detail and the strokes.
How do I start my work and is the process always the same?
Early in my painting journey my strokes were short, crisp and clean. Lines vivid and defined. A painting a day was my motto. As I have matured in my paintings, I find that I “struggle for perfection.” Perfection equates to balance and definition. I am always allow the strokes on the canvas to guide me regardless of whether it takes a day, a week or a month.
What is my go to technique?
I always prep my canvas before starting to add my inspirations. A prepped canvas provides the proper sheen and sleekness for my paints to glide and move on the canvas.
What is my favorite medium?
Acrylics… although I have just started working with modeling pastes and even more fun with bubble paints
How do I deal with creative blocks?
Thankfully creative blocks for me are few and far between. If I am not seeing on the canvas the vision in my mind’s eye, I just stop and walk away. Come back to it later and start again
Do I have a favorite quote?
“Thinking will not overcome fear but action will.” by W. Clement Stone.
What are my current or future projects?
I am working on a contemporary canvas, the largest I’ve worked on… 30 x 40. Vibrant and colorful. Excited to see
