Art In Martin Header

Art in Martin’s featured artist for February 2025 is H.S. Klinefelter. You can see her work in the Lounge on the ground floor of Martin Library.

About the Artist

H.S. Klinefelter’s journey as an artist is best told in her own words:

“Born and raised as a feral child in York County, I spent my time running wild in the woods among the trees and creeks blissfully ignored by my parents, reading My Side of the Mountain and Little House on the Prairie. I learned the names of plants and animals and insects, plotting my eventual liberation into the wilderness.

“This wild childhood inspired my love of nature and the environment as I grew into adulthood, cultivating my eye to see things that others may not notice. An attention to details and All the Small Things. I’m keenly aware of my surroundings, finding beauty in places that are unexpected.

“A lot of this collection was captured while my two boys were young and I was teaching them to know the forest around them, the names of wild things, and how to protect, appreciate, and utilize them in a safe and loving way.

“Stewardship is a great responsibility that I take seriously. Capturing these photos and transforming nature into art is a great passion in my life. I am currently working on an accompanying collection of sculptural pieces utilizing my extensive collection of collected found objects such as preserved bugs, feathers, shells, stones, moss, bones, and more. These will round out the collection and complete All the Small Things.”

Recommended Reading

It is no surprise that H.S. Klinefelter recommends her childhood inspiration, My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George, as pairing well with her exhibit (located in Martin’s Children’s Room in the Fiction section under GEO: https://york.chilipac.com/eg/opac/record/8115990).
