Featured Artist: Jewel Staub

Dillsburg artist Jewel Staub is the Dillsburg Area Public Library’s Featured Artist for November and December 2023. She is exhibiting acrylic paintings exploring the natural world. Her focus is on trees with special emphasis on the birch variety. Art Coordinator Shelby Pizzarro recently caught up with Jewel.

What is the source of your inspiration?

Nature, and the change in color of the seasons.

How would you describe your art?

Paintings that explore color and light!

What do you enjoy most about creating new art?

Learning new techniques.

How do you start new work?

I start with a thought and then develop the idea using my favorite colors. I usually work this way.

Do you have a favorite or “go to” technique when starting a work?

I like to prime my canvases first and then see where the colors lead me!

Do you have a favorite medium? Has your preference changed over the years?

My favorite medium at the moment is acrylics. After many years of using oils, it is a nice change.

Do you ever experience a creative block? If so, how do you rejuvenate your creativity?

Yes, I have experienced a block. I rejuvenate my creativity by looking at different ways of using color.

Do you have a favorite/inspirational quote?

“This, too, shall pass.”

Do you have any current or future projects you’d like to share?

I’m trying new techniques and changing the dimensions of my canvases.

If someone is interested in your work, how can they reach you?
