What can I do at Guthrie Memorial Library?

For Adults

ESL (English as a Second Language) Classes and Tutoring

Are you interested in taking the next step in your language development? The York County Literacy Council is offering lessons for those who wish to learn the English language. To sign up for classes or work with a tutor they must call the York County Literacy Council at 717-845-8719.

Who is this for? Adults
When is this held? Beginner Classes Tu & Th 5:30-8pm, Intermediate classes M & W 5:30-8pm. Tutoring by appt.

GED Classes

Are you interested in getting your GED to finish your schooling? The Lincoln Intermediate Unit #12 is offering GED classes twice a week at the Guthrie Memorial Library. Please contact the LIU at 888-669-7735 x6271 to register for the class.

Mystery Book Talk

Put your investigative skills to the test, and join the Mystery Book Talk. With our monthly discussions, a new mystery is unveiled for you to discuss the who, what, where, when, and why of the whodunnits. Meeting in the John & Joan Bare Center on the 1st Tuesday of every month, all are welcome to join our lively book talks!

Check with the library for availability of current & future months’ books.

Guthrie’s Day for Book Lovers

Every spring, the Guthrie Memorial Library partners with A Likely Story Book Store, and Random House to bring you a talented author(s) right to the library! During this luncheon in the John & Joan Bare Center the author(s) will discuss their book and Random House will talk about upcoming titles being released. Not only will you have the opportunity to listen to the author(s), but you will also get to meet them as well!

There will be a cost for this that includes the luncheon and a copy of the book being discussed.

Bull & Oyster Roast

Join us in the John & Joan Bare Center for some fantastic food and fun! Tickets are $50 each and include: Top round of beef, smoked ham, raw oysters on the half shell, peel & eat shrimp, Italian sausage, BBQ chicken, oyster stew, Maryland crab soup, plus lots more. Also included in the price: beer, water & soda. 13 jars and 50/50 will be available.

Must be 21 years or older to attend. Tickets will be available at the adult desk prior to the event, they will not be available at the door.

Summer Nights at the Library

We’re taking our nighttime entertainment to the roof! During the third Friday night of June, July & August, the Guthrie Library will be holding Summer Nights at the Library. With this annual fundraiser, lively entertainment will be held on the roof of the library, whether it be the Summer Solstice, a band or a jazz group, you won’t want to miss out!

The entertainment is meant as a fundraiser for the library at the same time as being fun for those who attend. This is just something a little different from our usual programming. Keep the 3rd Friday night of June, July and August open and check out the website as the time nears. We will have publicity at the library and on the website as the dates draw nearer.

For Families

Multicultural Day

Every year in March, we celebrate the world and all its diverse cultures on our Multicultural Day. Displays will be placed throughout the library, each one with their own country and culture. As you walk around, you will see each country’s representatives bring display items to share, food samples, their native wardrobe, and other unique pieces of their culture. Also during the day, we have music demonstrations and other culturally rich activities for your enjoyment. Take this day to learn something new, and appreciate others’ way of living!  A fun day for the whole family!

Mini Golf at the Library

Fore! How about golfing your way through the library? Wouldn’t that be a fun way to spend the day after Thanksgiving? Well you can do just that at the Guthrie Memorial Library. You start in the Children’s Department and work your way down to the 19th Hole in the Bare Center, where there will be raffles items, food, face painting and more. Don’t miss this exciting event here at Guthrie!

Dungeons and Dragons Club

Tell your own unique story with the teens of the Dungeons and Dragons Club. Whether your player is the smallest of creatures, or the mightiest of titans, you decide their fate. Share your stories with others in the group, and let the magic continue!

Middle School Book Talks

For the past 20+ years, Guthrie has been happy to host the Middle School Book Talks. In this unique program, children and young adult authors make a visit to the library to discuss their current book, why they started writing and answer questions. With many talented authors coming in over the years, the popularity of this program is ever-growing.

Kids of middle school age are welcome to attend the author’s discussion, ask their most burning questions, and meet the author afterwards! Stick around after the main events, and enjoy a slice of pizza. 

Children also get a free copy of the book being discussed.

Teen Chess Club

Bring your A-Game to the Teen Chess Club. Whether you are new to the game or an advanced pro, our group members are happy to teach you some tips and tricks to perfect your understanding of the game. All are welcome!

Please use instead – Join the Teen Reading Club for lively discussions and activities centered around a selected book. Each book may take multiple weeks to complete. Once a book is finished a new one will then be selected.

4-H Club

Creative Learning

In our twice a year, 4-week art class series, let your hands do all the work! See what beautiful pieces you can create. In each class, of the 4-week series, children will learn about famous artists and their artistic styles through painting, sculpting and drawing.
