Volunteer Spotlight: Karen Nellis

Karen is one of the Dillsburg Area Public Library’s newest volunteers. She and her husband moved to Dillsburg from Illinois in June, 2021. Her favorite things about volunteering at the library are being surrounded by books and seeing what others are choosing to read.

Before moving to Pennsylvania, Karen taught early childhood and special education and served on a variety of district level leadership teams for 35 years. She studied at Southern Illinois University and obtained advanced degrees at Northern Illinois University, Benedictine University and Aurora University.

She has found that Dillsburg is a very friendly and welcoming community. She is enjoying being closer to her family and the easy going pace of life here. An avid reader, one of her favorite books is Elizabeth George Speare’s The Witch of Blackbird Pond. More recently, Karen has enjoyed reading The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell by Robert Dugoni and This Tender Land by William Kent Kruger.

There are always volunteer opportunities at the library. Whether you staff the front desk or work behind the scenes, volunteering at the library is a great way to meet new people and give back to your community. Stop by for a volunteer application today!
