Genealogy and Local History Materials at York County Libraries

Many of the York County libraries have genealogy and local history materials that are specific to their area. Click here for an interactive map to determine the library nearest to the borough or township of interest.  You can also search our online catalog by subject or keyword for the name of the borough, township, or family in which you are interested.  Be aware, however, that some libraries also have uncataloged materials; call or email the library for more information.  Also note that most libraries are unable to perform research for you and a trip to the library may be required.

The only York County Library System library with microfilm is Guthrie Memorial Library.  (See below.)  Microfilm is also available at the York Heritage Trust.

Guthrie Memorial Library, at 2 Library Place in Hanover, PA, has an excellent collection of local history and genealogy materials in their Pennsylvania Room, including resources for Hanover, York County, and surrounding areas.  The Pennsylvania Room's print materials are included in the York Libraries catalog; microfilm, however, is not.  (Click here for a list of microfilm holdings.)  Hours vary; please call the library at 717-632-5183 and check the Pennsylvania Room schedule before visiting.

Genealogy and Local History Resources at Other Area Facilities

York County Archives - York County's records begin in August of 1749 when York County was formed from Lancaster County. The Archives stores records for over 40 different county offices for various time periods throughout the past 250 years. Some of the records held by the Archives include Marriages, Deeds, Wills, Birth Records, Death Records, and Tax Records.

Each family file contains various materials, for example: newspaper clippings of obituaries, weddings, and engagements; short genealogies (less than 40 pages); family group sheets; pedigree charts; related correspondence; and copies of original documents and photos. Five sets of index cards accompany each surname file. These cards include abstracts from church records, cemetery tombstone abstractions, will books and Orphans Court dockets (1749-1850); a sampling of pre-1800 tax records; and other selected sources.  A variety of newspapers, some dating back to the 1700s, are also available.

Penn State York Library - Penn State York's library has a collection of microfilm and microfiche resources that includes newspapers dating back to the 1800s, York County census, and the U.S. Direct Tax of 1798 for York County.  They also have Special Collections, a non-circulating collection that contains predominantly local and regional history materials.

Pennsylvania State Archives - The Pennsylvania State Archives collects, preserves and makes available for study the permanently-valuable public records of the Commonwealth, with particular attention given to the records of state government.
